State Issue 22: Parks Levy, permanent property tax levy
What it's about: Creating permanent funding for city parks.
What it would do: Raise $5.5 million a year. In the short term, that money would be used to help borrow money to improve 16 parks that would benefit 27 neighborhoods and do capital maintenance in other parks. The levy would last forever. As projects are paid for, new ones would be added.
How things are now: Parks are paid for out of the city’s general fund.
What happens if it passes: City residents would pay a 1-mill tax levy to support city parks. It would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $35 a year.
What happens if it fails: There is $55 million in deferred maintenance in city parks. Parks Director Willie Carden told The Enquirer: “If this fails – and I’m excited the public will have a say – the backlog will only become more humongous. And there will come a day when something will be shut down.”
