“SCIENCE NIGHT” AT THE MUSEUM CENTER
GIFTED STUDENTS FOCUS ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Cincinnati – On Wednesday, November 9th from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. over 200 Cincinnati Public School students from the Gifted Academy will be at the Cincinnati Museum Center for Science Night as a part of the Student Enterprise (StEP) Program. The third through sixth grade students will focus on research and development and present ways that products can be repurposed to have a new use to teachers and parents.
This evening full of hands-on activities is an integration of Science, Economics and Financial Literacy; all concepts our students need to understand to compete in the 21st century. Students and parents will also have the opportunity to conduct experiments in the LITE LAB (Learning, Innovation, Technology, and Education) and take a tour of the Ice Age and Cave in the museum.
Student Enterprise (STEP) equips students in the region with 21st century skills such as creativity, entrepreneurship, critical-thinking, innovation and financial literacy. The program has a strong focus on the core academic curriculum and activities that teach personal finance skills. StEP connects classroom work with the “world of work” through practical learning. The earlier we influence students and teach them these skills that will last a lifetime, the stronger our economy will be.
The Cincinnati Gifted Academy is a new program offered by Cincinnati Public Schools designed specifically for academically and cognitively gifted students. It’s rigorous, yet flexible. Students are encouraged to learn both independently and as members of inquiry-driven, project-based teams. Differentiated learning and leadership development are stimulated. An experiential approach to learning means that students are not limited to physical classrooms, but use the broader community as a learning lab.
“This parent/student event is also a way for parents to get to know one another. This is the first year that the school has been in existence and this provides an excellent way to continue to build a school culture in a fun, engaging format.”- says Dr. Val Krugh, StEP Director.
