Stock Market Game Winners Visit New York

On May 11, 2011 the Economics Center hosted the 2nd Regional Stock Market Game Portfolio Challenge. First, second and third place teams who participated in the fall, spring and year-long Stock Market Game were invited to present their winning portfolio to a panel of four judges for the chance to win a trip to New York City, an experience supported by Ohio National Financial Services.
After 800 teams in the Cincinnati region completed the 10 weeks of the Stock Market Game competition, the student teams from Cincinnati Country Day and McGuffey Foundation School were selected as the top two teams in the region. These teams not only had the highest investment portfolio values, but they also presented the expert judges with a thoughtful investment strategy, portfolio results and key learnings. The students explained their research that went into choosing companies to invest in and elaborated on concepts such as dividends, commissions, diversification, and short sales. Students learned that stocks can be volatile and that fluctuations in the market are natural.
Thanks to Ohio National, three New York firms, Jennison, Lazard and Goldman Sachs, hosted the two teams of eighth grade students. To learn more about the students’ experience at these three firms, check out photos and presentations from their visit, click here.
For several of our students, this was their first experience in New York City, staying in downtown Manhattan, visiting three large New York City financial institutions, riding the subway, visiting Central Park, Grand Central Station, the American Museum of Finance and so much more! According to one of our students, this was the “best trip of my life.”
We appreciate Ohio National’s support of this program and thank our judges, participants, teachers and all individuals that make this program the success that it is every year. Without a doubt, through the Stock Market Game, the Economics Center has been able to teach students about investing and excite them about learning.
