Financial Education Conference Prepares Educators for 2010 Mandate
Beginning in 2010, the Ohio Core will require the integration of economics and financial literacy into the high school curriculum. In preparation for this mandate, the Economics Center held the Southwest Ohio Regional Financial Education Conference on April 22.
This day-long conference provided professional development training sessions taught by business professionals in the financial industry. Teachers learned about the required content, ways to integrate it into their classroom instruction, and obtained materials, resources and lessons they can utilize to help them meet the new mandate.
The conference was a great success. Over 120 teachers representing the majority of public school districts in our area were in attendance. It allowed teachers to discuss course design, gain content knowledge and begin to plan how to get the business community actively engaged in the classrooms.
The event was sponsored by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Chapter of the Jumpstart Coalition for Fiancial Literacy. It was endorsed by Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray, the Ohio Society of CPAs, and the Greater Cincinnati United Way.
This conference further solidified the Economics Center for Education & Research as a regional leader in financial education efforts.
