Winton Woods Elementary School received a first place award for local impact at the elementary-age level at this year's Global Youth Service Day at the Duke Energy Center on Saturday, April 17. Students Kenny Greer, Nick Kress, Ramiro Sotelo and Makaila Ware--along with Principal Steve Denny and fourth grade teacher Susan Fisher--represented the school at the event.

"Schools and community service organizations from southwest Ohio shared some of the great things going on in our schools and communities," said Denny. "The WWES team was recognized among almost 100 area elementary schools for the Warriors Give Back program at the StEP Warrior Marketplace and our GTE School Beautification Project."

The StEP (STudent Enterprise Warrior Marketplace, a partnership with UC's Center for Economics Research and Education, made charitable giving its focus during the winter and spring as students' Warriorbucks donations raised money for Toys For Tots and the International Agape Mission's relief efforts in Haiti. The GTE (Gifted and Talented Education) Beautification Project had students raising funds and completing a service learning project to improve the landscaping features in the front of the school.

Projects were evaluated by a pair of event judges on service learning components as well as general voting by visitors. The students each received a certificate and pin while Winton Woods Elementary School received a $250 mini-grant.
