Choir Games to impact Cincy to the tune of $73.5M

The 2012 World Choir Games being held in Cincinnati will have a $73.5 million economic impact on the area.

The estimate, from the Economics Center for Education and Research at the University of Cincinnati, projects the direct and indirect spending for the event will generate $1.8 million in new tax revenue.

The 20,000 participants are expected to account for 45,000 hotel room nights and direct spending of $13.4 million, with an economic impact of $26.7 million.

The event is projected to draw 200,000 spectators to the area, who will spend $12.6 million directly and generate $25.7 million in indirect impact.

The World Choir Games itself is projected to spend $10 million in the organization and running of the event, resulting in an economic impact of $21.1 million.

Cincinnati will be the first American city to host the event, which will bring both young and old singers alike together to engage in friendly competition and the mixing of cultures.

The event will be the largest convention book in the region’s history and the city’s largest international event, said Dan Lincoln, president & CEO of the Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau and President & CEO of World Choir Games 2012 Inc.

The 2010 games are being held in Shaoxing, China July 15-26.
