Money Savvy Moms

Our goal is to strengthen families by positively impacting the basic personal finance knowledge of mothers and students in the underserved schools. The Money-Savvy Moms aims to demonstrate that effective money-management lessons can be reinforced at home by empowered parents and care-takers. These reinforcements will, over time, positively impact student achievement.

The Money-Savvy Moms will involve developing school family nights for students and their parents, through collaboration with school leaders. The concept of parent nights already exists in the Cincinnati Public elementary schools; however, their current structure is that of a parent-teacher conference and offers no financial skill content and development to the parents who frequently lag behind their children in this arena.

The Money-Savvy Moms family nights will occur four times during the academic year.

At each session, mothers of StEP students (or primary care-givers) will be engaged in an educational session, where topics such as budgeting, saving, banking options, and general family financial education will be discussed and applied.

School leaders and community resources will be organized to support the effort. Local community banks,Community Learning Centers, and other community organizations dedicated to helping improve money management skills in the underserved populations will serve as partners and presenters.

During Money-Savvy Moms family nights, college students fulfilling their required community service will engage the students in educational activities, to allow parents to devote their attention and time to the personal finance instruction and activities.

Money-Savvy Moms will utilize a proven personal finance curriculum that meaningfully relates to the needs of the parents of StEP students. The parents will have quality, relevant instruction, workbooks and assignments during these sessions. They will be able to ask questions, get individual advising, and relate to other parents in similar situations.
